aju nice!

This is my first K-pop related post and I am super excited because I get to write about SEVENTEEN! My appreciation for K-pop began last year. I grew up knowing H.O.T, BoA, Shinhwa, g.o.d, and a couple other first gen k-pop artists, but wouldn’t have called myself a fan. Famous groups like BTS and Blackpink have made their mark globally and it has been really wonderful to see. The one misconception I try to debunk is that K-pop fans are predominately Korean. When I went to see SuperM on tour last year, I was shocked to see how diverse the fandoms are. I hate to call K-pop a genre because I would say it’s more of an institution. From fandoms, to debuts, to trainee periods, to comebacks, to appearances on music and variety shows, the world of K-pop is truly one of a kind. Not to mention essential to Korea’s economy. After digging into lots of different groups and artists, SEVENTEEN has become one of my favorite artists. They are the favorite in the cousin group chat too.

I can honestly say that there’s SO much content I could share with you, but since I can’t, I’ll try to start with some of my favorites songs. My entire ‘On Repeat’ playlist on Spotify is 100% K-artists at this point and ~50% of the songs are from SEVENTEEN’s discography. I became a fan during their ‘Ode to You’ era & I glad I did because they are phenomenal artists. I want to name that music is deeply personal so you may or may not feel their music style. That’s cool too. There are a ton of Korean artists I listen to that don’t fit under the heading of K-pop, but saving those for another post

the basics

  1. there are 13 members (S.Coups, Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, DK/Dokyeom, Mingyu, The8, Seungkwan, Vernon, Dino)
  2. 3 units – performance, vocal, and hip-hop
  3. they debuted in 2015
  4. their fandom name: Carats

why I stan

  • they are incredibly synchronized in their choreography. I like that they are really theatrical in their performances & every performance is seriously on point.
  • they produce & write most of their own music. they are self-producing which really makes their music personal & I like that they have a very unique identity and sound.
  • variety kings! They release their own content on their Youtube page & are always incredibly funny when they visit variety shows such as Knowing Brothers and Weekly Idol.
  • healing messages through lyrics – for me, SEVENTEEN’s lyrics have always resonated with me. Their song ‘Hug’ from their vocal line has lifted my spirits through some hard times. The members are honest and open about their struggles which is super relatable.
